Moots Visit

As I mentioned yesterday, we veered off course a bit to visit Steamboat Springs. Seeing as we missed out on Jackson Hole, we thought it best to visit a ski town during our trip. Ok, that’s a total lie- I just really wanted to visit Moots Cycles. I managed to convince Edie that it was a good idea. She had fun when we visited Independent Fabrication before we left, so I worked that angle.

I’ve always held Moots in high regard with their understated, yet overstated simple aesthetic. They don’t paint their bikes, but put these totally big bold block lettered stickers on. It’s like a Merlin or Litespeed but actually bad ass and doesn’t scream I’m a middle aged doctor or lawyer. In fact, Moots is just solid, they make great bikes and seem to be on their own trajectory.

Meeting the guys and visiting their factory only cemented this more. They inhabit a very sleek and modern space. The work areas are clean and streamlined and the workers both meticulous and efficient.

Rob and Jon were very gracious and we spent a good deal of time with Jon discussing bikes, racing and life. He gave us some insight on the area and his time at Moots. We even got into the labors of Interbike prep and launching a new website (shhh).

After showing Jon our bikes parked out front and discussing the questions and comments that come along with viewing them, he turned us over to Kassi. She led our tour through the factory.

We mingled our way through various rooms, areas and departments. From tube mitering to CNC to tacking to welding to finishing to bead blasting and more, Edie and I saw it all.

Once we were done with the tour we borrowed an air pump, topped off our tires and discussed our route to Kremmling. Brad helped us out tremendously and gave us a great route that would take us over Gore Pass. With that, we were on our way, in hopes of another visit someday that would include bikes without panniers and a chance to ride with the staff.

Thanks again to all at Moots, especially Jon, Rob, Kassi and Brad for the visit.

    Hi
I was with some cyclist friends last night and I was telling them about your trip which they were excted to hear about. We were talking about standing and pedaling versus sitting down and they asked whether you had mentioned the subject . Maybe it ‘s a trite question but I’d like you ideas on the subject anyway if you don’t mind. Does it make you more tired when you stand ? Of course you know I am not a rider!

Brett and Edie, Sounds like you are having a good time and seeing the US as it should be seen. We are Amy Brady’s parents and we live just east of St Louis. If you are crossing the Mississippi in this area let us know. we have extra beds, laundry and a good meal to offer you. Take care and continue having a wonderful adventure.

  3. Hi Don and Sue, thank you so much fornthe offer! We’re working on mapping out our Missouri leg. If we go near you and it fits in with our route, we would ABSOLUTELY love to see you and take you up on it. We’ll be in touch in the next day or two once we’ve got our plan. Thanks! We hope you’re doing well! — Edie & Brett
